•Please note that in order to view the images on this disc you need the QuickTime 1.6 System Extension installed into the System Folder on your Start-up disc. This extension is provided on this CD-ROM in the “Tools & Info” folder. Please read through the “Quick Start”section below for details on how to install the QuickTime (QT) extension.
•Since the printing of the front covers for this CD-ROM, we have added a new resolution version, and have consequently changed the naming convention of the image files. We have added a "Slide" resolution version that is 1875 x 1250 pixels at 266 dpi. This file is denoted by an "S" in its name. An "S" was previously used to denote a "Screen" version of the image. The "Screen" version denotation has now been changed to "M" for "Multimedia". To summerize, each file now comes in 4 resolutions as follows:
•The Electronic Browser on this Disc is a Kudo Image Browser. We created a catelogue that shows all the images on the disc. Read the section below on "Viewing the Images" for specific instructions on how to use this Browser.
•The Photoshop Tryout that is on this disc will open the Hi-Res versions of the images at 2.436'' x 3.248'' at 266 DPI and the Slide-Res versions of the images in a smaller dimension as well. The images are really 9x12 inches at 266 dpi for the Hi-Res image and 1875 x 1250 pixels at 266 dpi for the Slide-Res images, but this trial version of Photoshop resamples the image so that it displays with its saved dimensions at 72 dpi. This sample application is no substitute for proper image manipulation software.
Welcome to the Page Overtures One™ CD-ROM. Your Page Overtures CD-ROM contains 100 high-resolution background textures for printing, presentations, and multimedia. Also included on this disc are an Electronic Browser for previewing and perusing the images, and a "Tools & Info" folder that contains items and information needed to use this disc. A Printed Browser is also available. It is located in the inside front of your Page Overtures CD-ROM case. Please be sure to send in your registration card so that your Page Overtures license can begin and so we can also inform you of product upgrades.

Follow the instructions below to get your Page Overtures CD-ROM up and running.
•Make sure you have the minimum System Requirements
To view the images on this disc, you will need a Macintosh II class machine running System 6.07 or later (System 7 recommended), 8-Bit Color Monitor, QuickTime 1.6 or greater (included on the disc; installation instructions given below), 4 MB RAM (8-32 MB recommended), and a CD-ROM Drive.
•Mount the Page Overtures CD-ROM
To bring the Page Overtures CD-ROM icon to your desktop, follow the usual steps for mounting a CD-ROM using your particular CD-ROM drive. See your CD-ROM drive manual for further instructions.
•Install QuickTime 1.6 into the System folder on your Startup Drive and Restart.
The Page Overtures Images are JPEG compressed PICT files (highest-quality, loss-less settings) . They can be opened like any PICT file as long as QuickTime 1.6 or later is installed into the System Folder on your Startup Drive. The QuickTime 1.6 System Extension is on this CD-ROM in the “Tools & Info” folder. If you do not already have QuickTime 1.6 installed, follow the installation instruction below.
•QuickTime 1.6 Installation Instructions:
1) Mount your Page Overtures CD-ROM as described above.
2) Open the “Tools and Info” folder that is located on your Page Overtures CD-ROM.
3) Locate the "System Folder" on your Startup Drive. If you have an earlier version of QuickTime (QT) already installed please throw this version into the Trash and empty the trash. If you are using System 7.0 or later, the QT extension will be in the Extensions folder with in your System folder. If you are using System 6.7 or earlier, the QT extension will be in the System Folder itself.
4) Drag the QT 1.6 icon into the closed "System folder" on your boot drive. Answer “OK” to the dialogue that asks “Should I put these items into the right folder?”
5) Restart Your Mac. The QT 1.6 extension will not be in use until you restart your Mac.
6) After restarting your Mac, remount your Page Overtures CD-ROM (as in step 1 above). Now you can view the images on the CD-ROM.
••Image Specifications••
Each of the images on this Page Overtures CD-ROM comes in three resolutions. Each of these resolutions matches the resolution requirements for a particular use.
•Hi-Res (H): 9x12 inches at 266 dpi (133-line screen) 24-bit color, JPEG-PICT; for use in high-resolution printing and slide production.
•Lo-Res (L): 9x12 inches at 72 dpi, 24-bit color, JPEG-PICT; for use as a placement proxy for the Hi-Res version.
•Slide (S): 1875 x 1250 pixels at 266 dpi, 24-bit color, JPEG-PICT; for use as in slide production.
•Multimedia (M): 640x480 pixels, 24-bit color, JPEG-PICT; for use as a presentation, multimedia, or video background screen.
••Image Naming Convention and Organization••
The images on this disc are arranged into category folders. The category folders can be seen in the main window of the Page Overtures CD-ROM. The category folders are: Fabric, Food, Water, Clouds, Flowers, Foliage, Fire, Concrete & Stucco, Rock, Granite, Marble, Industrial Grunge, Electronics, Wood, Metal, Masonry & Urban.
Within a category folder are the image folders. Each image folder is named with a root name, that is sometimes the same as the category name, plus a "." and a 3 digit suffix. The last two digits of the suffix indicate the image number within the category. For example, the "Food" category folder contains the image folders "Coffee.001", "Pepper.001", "Beans.001", etc. and the "Flowers" category folder contains the image folders "Flowers.001","Flowers.002", etc.
Each image folder contains the High Resolution (H), Low-Resolution (L), Slide-Resolution (S), and Multimedia-Resolution (M) version of the image as described above in the section "Image Specifications". Each image is named with the root name followed by a “.” and a 3 digit suffix. The first digit of this suffix is either an “H”, “L”, “S”, or "M" indicating its resolution. The last two digits indicate the image number within the category. For example, the "Beans.001" image folder contains the files: "Beans.H01","Beans.L01", "Beans.S01", Beans.M01.
Given the above, to navigate to the high resolution version of "Beans.001", you would need to follow the path:
Page Overtures One:Food: Beans.001: Beans.H01
(Volume Name: Category Name: Image Name: Image)
••Viewing the images••
To view the images you can: refer to the Printed Browser enclosed in the front cover of your Page Overtures CD-ROM case; use the Electronic Browser located on the root level of the disc; or just double-click on an image file. Be aware that when opened and decompressed the Hi-Res images will become 22 MB files and may be slow and difficult to manipulate. The Operating System level compression/decompression provided by QuickTime allows simple programs such as TeachText to open these files with as little as 500K of memory, though cutting and pasting isn't possible.
•Using the Electronic Browser to View the Images.
The Electronic Browser provided on this disc is a Kudo Image Browser file. Just double-click on the Browser icon to launch this Browser. The Kudo Image Browser application and two Read Me files on how to use the Kudo Image Browser are located in the "Tools & Info" folder. Following, is an overview of how to use the Browser, to peruse and preview the images on this disc. For more information on how to use the Kudo Browser in general, please refer to the Kudo Read Me files mentioned above.
##To Open the Browser, double-click on its icon which is located on the main level of this CD-ROM. When the Browser is open, you will see thumbnails (sample size pictures) of all the images that are on this disc.
##To Navigate through the Browser, use the scroll bars on the right and at the bottom of the Browser window. The scroll bar on the bottom is a "Riffle Scroll" that quickly goes through all the images in the Browser.
##To Preview an image, select the image thumbnail and select "Preview" from the "Image" menu. This will open the image from within Kudo. If you double-click on the Thumbnail, the image will open using its creator application, which in this case is Photoshop. The image will open using a Trial version of PhotoShop located in the "Tools & Info" folder on this disc. Beware that opening the Hi-Res version of the image will take a long time since they are 22MB files
##To Find an image or a set of images, select "Find" from the "Image" menu. This will open a Find Dialogue from which you can set the find criteria. After a Find is performed you will see thumbnails of only those images that fit the Find criteria. To get back thumbnails for all the images choose "Find All" from the "Image" menu. Sorts can be done on found sets without undoing the find. A very useful use of the "Find" function is to be able to "sort" the images to show only one resolution of all the images, like just the Hi-Res images, or just the Multimedia images. The following section describes this more specifically.
##How To view only the High, Low, Slide, or Multimedia versions of Page Overtures.
You may want to sort the images so that only one resolution of all the images is showing at one time. For example, you are looking for only Multimedia background screens so you want to see the thumbnails for only the Multimedia versions of the images. To do this you need to perform a "Find". To perform this find, select "Find" from the image menu. Set the first two find criteria fields to "Name" and "Contains" and then type in either ".H", ".L",".S", or ".M" to indicate the resolution that you want. This will find all of the images of the resolution that you specified. It is important to include the "." in the resolution indicator or you will also find images whose names contains either an "H","L","S", or "M" regardless of their resolution. Once you have found all the images of a specific resolution, you can do a sort from the "Sort" menu by "Location". This will categorize the images into their categories as seen on the disc. To summerize, add the following to the find dialog to view the thumbnails of only one resolution at a time.
-Find: [Name] : [Contains] : ".H" will show you the thumbnails for only Hi-Res images
-Find: [Name] : [Contains] : ".L" will show you the thumbnails for only Lo-Res images
-Find: [Name] : [Contains] : ".S" will show you the thumbnails for only Slide-Res images
-Find: [Name] : [Contains] : ".M" will show you the thumbnails for only Multimedia-Res images
##To Find the Original Image, select "Reveal Original" from the "Image" menu. This will open the folder on the Page Overtures CD-ROM that holds the image. Within this folder you will see the four different resolution versions of the image: Hi(H), Lo(L), Slide(S), and Multimedia(M).
##To Sort, select one of the menu items under the "Sort" menu. Sorting will arrange the images by the sort critiria that you select from the menu. If you did a Find before doing a sort, the sort just arranges the images in the found set. Sorting by location will arrange the Page Overtures images into the categories as seen on the disc.
##To copy an image to your own hard drive, you can select the image thumbnail and select "Reveal Original" as described above, and then do a regular Finder copy to your own hard drive. Or, select the thumbnail and then select "Copy" from the edit menu. This will transfer the image to the "Clipboard". You can then paste the image into another document.
##To Get Information on an image, select its thumbnail, then select "Get Info" from the "Image" menu. The Get Info window gives the Name, Size (in bytes), and Kind (ie. "Photoshop Try Out Image") of the image. It also gives notes on the image and the pathway to the original image on the Page Overtures CD-ROM. You can edit the Notes field in the main Browser window while in "List" display (List display described below). In this display, the notes information is displayed next to thumbnail.
##To change the display of the images between "List" and "Gallery", you can use the buttons in the upper left corner of the window. Or, you can select "List" or "Gallery" from the "View" menu. The "List" display arranges the images one underneath the other. It also shows the "Get Info" information on the right side of the thumbnail. The "Gallery" display arranges the images like words on a page, filling a row, and then moving to the next.
##To speed-up the Browser, copy the Browser file and the Kudo Image Browser Application located in the "Tools & Info" folder to your own hard-drive. You will not be able to preview the images, only the thumbnails, unless you have the CD mounted. If you don't have Photoshop installed on your own Hard Drive and you want to preview the images by double-clicking the thumbnails and thereby opening the images with their creator application, then copy the PhotoShop Trial Version to your hard drive as well.
•Using the Printed Browser to View the Images.
The Printed Browser is located in the inside front cover of your Page Overture CD-ROM case. The Printed Browser contains a sample size image of each of the images that are on the CD-ROM. The sample images are arranged by category. To find the corresponding image on the Page Overtures CD-ROM that you have found on the Printed Browser, first locate the image's category folder. The category folders are on the main level of the CD-ROM. Open the image's category folder and find the folder with the same name as the image name you are looking for. Within this folder are the 4 resolution files for the Image. For example, I find "Beans.001" on the Printed Browser and now I want to see the image on the CD-ROM. I open the Page Overture CD-ROM icon where I see the category folders. I locate and open the "Food" category folder. Within the "Food" category folder, I look for the "Beans.001" folder. I find and open this folder. Within this folder are the 4 different resolution files for the image: "Beans.H01", "Beans.L01", "Beans.S01", and "Beans.M01". Now I can choose which image I want to view, and just double-click on it. The image will open using the Trial Version of Photoshop located in the "Tools & Info" folder on the Page Overtures CD-ROM.
•Using the Adobe Photoshop Trial Version to view the images.
Just double-click on any of the images to view them using the Photoshop Trial Version. The creator application for the images is Photoshop so the images will open automatically. The Photoshop Trial Version is located in the "Tools & Info" folder on the Page Overtures CD-ROM.
••Decompressing and Converting the JPEG Compressed Images••
As described above under the "QuickStart" section, the Page Overtures Images are JPEG compressed PICT files (highest-quality, loss-less settings) . They can be opened like any PICT file as long as QuickTime 1.6 or later is installed into the System Folder on your Startup Drive. The QuickTime 1.6 System Extension is on this CD-ROM in the “Tools & Info” folder. If you do not already have Q.T. 1.6 installed, follow the installation instructions above in the "QuickStart" section.
To decompress a Page Overture image, just open the image file with an application that can open a PICT file (Photoshop, PixelPaint, Painter). Once the image is open you can save-as to a different file format like TIFF or EPS.
••Tips on Using Page Overtures••
Page Overtures can be used for Hi-resolution Printing, presentations, and Slide creation. Following are some tips on how to use Page Overtures in these applications.
•Using Page Overtures for High-Resolution Printing Projects
Page Overtures was created for the DTP professional. We carefully selected images that would make good backdrops for your own text and art. We then scanned them at very high resolution (pixels) and retouched them to make sure that the images were clean and ready for immediate use.
In choosing the size and DPI for these images, we decided on a 9x12 inch image at 266 DPI. This gives an image that will fill an 8.5" x 11" page, or A4 page, with a half-inch on each side for bleed. The 266 DPI translates to a 133 line-screen which gives a very high resolution print-out.
To facilitate your use of Page Overtures, we have supplied a Lo-Res version of the Hi-Res images. This Lo-Res image can be used as a placement graphic while you are designing your page layout. This can save you from having to cope with the Hi-Res version, a 22 MB file, that will eat your RAM as a between meal snack. Depending on how adept your software is at memory handling, these large file sizes can be unwieldy.
Page Overtures are PICT files. If your page layout program does not open or import PICT files then you will have to convert the image. To convert the image, open the image using an application that can open PICT files, and save them to the different formats your software can handle. We would recommend you complain bitterly to the companies that do not support this excellent, and basic Apple standard, format.
•Using Page Overtures for Presentations and Multimedia
The Multimedia version of each Page Overture is provided to supply you with an easy to use background for your multimedia projects, presentations, or video productions. The 640x480 size will fit the 13-inch monitor size perfectly. Since most multimedia applications accept Pict files, you should be able to import the Page Overtures you want to use. Once imported, you can add your own text and graphics from within your presentation or multimedia program.
•Slide Production
The Slide version of each Page Overtures is provided to give you quick access to using the images for output to film to create slides. The slide version is of a high enough resolution that the image should look on slide as it does on the screen. You can also create your own slide version of a Page Overtures image by resampling the High-Res version down to 1875 x 1250 pixels at 266 DPI.
